I was in Holland last weekend, I’d been to Amsterdam before, this time our base was Haarlem. With the use of a car I was able to pick out some more random spots to visit. Earlier this year I heard about the Miffy Museum and had to drag everyone there to experience the cuteness.
Until I’d visited Amsterdam, I thought Miffy was a Japanese character. I’d seen Miffy merchandise in Japan and it just made sense as she has the same simplistic art style as Hello Kitty and Rilakkuma. But no, she is the creation of Dutch artist Dick Bruna, and this museum displays some of his other work too.
The museum is in Utrecht. We got there by car but it’s easily accessible by train too. When you enter, you are greeted by a huge gold Miffy sculpture.
Next, you enter a big room where the walls are covered with all of the Miffy books in different languages. I didn’t know Miffy was so popular worldwide!
Then you enter an area where you can watch a Miffy show on screen. There was a display of fan submissions, these were things which were sent to Dick Bruna, along with letters from the senders. Most of them were sent from Japanese ladies.
There is a cabinet full of bunny figurines. I love Sylvanian families, I want to go to the Sylvanian Family theme park someday.
There is a lot of bunny themed art on show. Some of it is a little creepy, don’t you think?
Then there is another kids play area, in case they get bored looking at all the art.
The next part was very strange. You go up a stairs and you are in this corridor which is kid-height. You have to go on your knees if you’re an adult and along the corridor are these little dioramas with Miffy in various scenes. I bought postcards of these as they were very hard to photograph.
Finally we hit the gift shop. I have a thing for museum gift shops and this one didn’t disappoint. It’s huge. I had been to the Miffy store in character town in Tokyo and this one is better.
I really recommend this museum, it’s the cutest place I’ve ever been, even cuter than the Moomin Cafe, in my opinion! I was very very impressed.
