Do you know the Suica penguin? If you have traveled in Tokyo at all, you may have found this adorable little penguin mascot on your subway pass card. I fell in love with him the moment I saw him. There’s something so endearing about his big wide eyes! You can imagine how excited I was to find a Suica penguin store on a recent trip to Tokyo.
As far as I am aware, there is only one Suica penguin store in all of Japan. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Pop up cafés and collaborations appear occasionally but the “Pensta” store in Tokyo Station is the only permanent shop. And boy is it hard to find! I’ve been to Tokyo five times now and only managed to find the Suica Penguin store on purpose ONCE.
All I can say is that it’s near the Shinkansen platform. This is where I accidentally found it twice. There is also an information desk where you can ask and they will probably give you a map and save you hours of frustration. Ok maybe I didn’t spend hours looking for the suica penguin store but I did look for it on two occasions and failed to find it. I spent around 30 minutes each time – after that the crazy maze that is the underground mall at Tokyo station starts to become suffocating. Worth it though if you do find this store!
Look how adorable the Suica Penguin is at Halloween! I was lucky to see him in three different seasons. The lady at the shop was amused by how excited I was. Of course I had to take pictures of myself hugging the huge display penguin at the center of the store. Where is that photo? Well, it’s not very flattering but I am going to post it anyway…
Yes, that wasn’t even the same year, because he had the Christmas outfit on. I do it every time. Excuse the awkward cropping, I tried to make it look like I wasn’t sitting on the floor (all bow before Suica penguin’s almighty cuteness) making a fool of myself.
The last time I visited (in December), I was disappointed with the range of merchandise. The selection is very small and seems to change frequently so I was just unlucky. There’s a huge range of Suica penguin merch on Amazon Japan and Rakuten though. I ended up buying a mug, slippers and a 2016 diary. You can see the slippers below when I was on a plane. I keep them in my travel bag because they’re washable and comfy for curling up on plane seats. Do you like Suica Penguin? Do you know a character that’s just as cute? Please let me know in the comments!
