I found out you can do a close encounter with the New Zealand kiwi bird so I had to do that instead of the red panda one because the kiwi is such an icon when it comes to New Zealand, and I’m sure you can’t do this in any other country (you probably can but it’s not going to be as cool as doing it in the bird’s native country!)
It was only a baby!
Would you drive this awesome car?
Such an ugly picture of me but it’s the only one I have without my husband in it…
Kiwi egg a few days from hatching
Look at that round kiwi butt, how adorable!
Then we went to the next room where the baby kiwis were sleeping. They were only a few days old – maybe 6? I can’t remember. The staff member held the little fella and allowed us to pet him! It was a special experience as even most people living in New Zealand don’t manage to get close to a kiwi in their lifetimes, they’re so rare and hide when people are around.
It just wanted to sleep…
Another, more awake kiwi
I would definitely do something like this again. Although it’s expensive, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and very educational. I don’t generally like zoos but Auckland Zoo is doing some great work behind-the-scenes so it was very different to the ones I’ve visited before.
