My laptop’s mouse has been giving me trouble lately so I haven’t been able to edit photos. Luckily it decided to work today so I took the opportunity to make a short post about our recent trip to Auckland. There’s already so much content on this blog about Asia, so I’m going to hold off on writing about our honeymoon trip to Hong Kong and Japan. I’ve wanted to go to New Zealand for a while – mostly to see kiwi birds and the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings movie set. I’m happy that we accomplished both of those goals on this trip, even though it was just a few days.

We only had three full days in Auckland so we didn’t have time to see as much as we’d have liked. Since we didn’t want to rent a car, we took two tours so they could drive us to some of the nature reserves. To be completely honest, I picked one of the tours just because I saw the super awesome picture frame photo op at the Waitakere ranges. I think it was worth it! And the tour wasn’t too bad either.
The pink drink is actually my husband’s…I knocked it all over the table after this photo because I’m super clumsy…
Anyhoo, to start at the beginning, we arrived at around 7am after a six and a haf hour flight. Unfortunately we weren’t able to check into our hotel so we had to wander around the locality until around 3pm. I ended up falling asleep in the lobby for an hour but after that we hit Starbucks and the Auckland War Memorial Museum. We found a nice botanical garden near the museum that reminded me of the one in Dublin.
On the left is a maori carving and on the right – a giant penguin from the natural history section. I could have spent hours in that museum.
The middle picture is a poster from Air New Zealand, I wish I had somewhere to hang a picture it as they were for sale and I love the art style.
I really enjoyed the museum – although “war” is prominent in the name, its contents are quite diverse, ranging from maori artifacts to a temporary exhibition about Air New Zealand.

Now I wish I’d sat on one of these little toadstools, might have been a neat photo.
The next day we took a city tour, I didn’t find many cute things on this excursion apart from these little mushroom stools at the top of a hill. The weather was pretty cloudy all the time – quite a change from ever-sunny Perth.
We also saw this huge Santa decoration, apparently it’s there all year round? Very odd! Perhaps some Auckland locals can elaborate?
In the afternoon we went on a hike and visited a picturesque beach with magnetic sand (it contained iron from volcanic eruptions!).
Did you spot Miffy on my hoodie? I went back to the Miffy x 2% fashion store in Hong Kong and got it.
The next day we went to Hobbiton, I’ll write a full post about it later because I took a lot of photos. I’m definitely not a fan of the books or movies but predictably I just thought the hobbit houses looked cute. We also got to have lunch at the Green Dragon Inn.
The kiwi just wanted to sleep. I know that feeling bro.
On our final day the weather was awful but I’d booked a Kiwi Close Encounter at Auckland Zoo so we were lucky to be inside most of the day. Again, this will get a post of its own but to summarise – I got to pet a six day old kiwi bird! So adorable!
